The Laveen Lions are celebrating 33 years of community service
When the Laveen Lions Club first met back in 1974, charter members chose to adopt
the simple two-word Lion motto “We Serve.”
Over the past three decades our club has
grown into a dynamic organization of sixty men and women committed to serving
both global and local needs.
Do you wish to be a part of the community?
Do you wish to make a difference?
Do you enjoy camaraderie and fun times?
Then you are not alone and we would be honored for you to
join us.
Uncertain... read on...
Lions are the largest service club organization in the world!
1.35 million members in 45000 local affiliates across 200 countries are dauntless in their
service to the public.
In 1925, no less than Helen Keller herself challenged the Lions to become
"Knights of the blind" and Lions members take part in a worldwide campaign against blindness and hearing loss.
Ever since Helen's inspirational speech, eyeglasses and hearing aids, otherwise discarded, have been collected,
refurbished and distributed worldwide to those in need by the Lions Sight and
Hearing Foundation. Last year alone, 5 million pairs found their way into
needy hands around the globe.
Around the state...
On the state level, we support Lions Camp Tatiyee
, a summer retreat in the
White Mountains for disabled children and adults. Campers range in age
from 6 to 90 and often describe Camp Tatiyee as a life-changing experience.
...and in our local community...
The Laveen Lions Club’s greatest impact is local. During the ten month
Lions program season, (we recess during summer), there seems to be
something happening each week. Major events include the
Laveen Country
Challenge, a bicycle tour in February in conjunction with the
Laveen
Community Council Pit Barbecue that attracts eight hundred
to a thousand participants from across the country. At the Barbecue,
Lions roll up their sleeves and man "the pits" by preparing and slow
roasting 2,500 pounds of beef and 1,500 pounds of pork to perfection.
The Saturday before the barbecue, families line Dobbins Road between 43rd
and 51st Avenues for the
Laveen Community Appreciation Parade. For many
new residents, this lineup of old cars and antique tractors, horseback
riders and 4-H Club floats is a delightful introduction to our community.
In April, the Bougainvillea Golf Course plays host to the
Laveen Lions Annual Golf Tournament.
This year the event drew one hundred players who enjoyed
a fine day of golf topped off with some great prizes while the Lions Club
earned much needed funds for community efforts.
...and even when they think we're not looking...
Then there are “special projects.” Recently a Lions Club member noticed
students at Cheatham Elementary School crowding against a wall to escape
the late spring sun. Soon after, 23 drought-tolerant shade trees were
planted around the school grounds thanks to the efforts of the Lions Club,
Laveen Community Council and Moon Valley Nursery, in coming years,
generations of students will have shade during recess.
...still not sure... why not
visit a meeting
In between big events, the Laveen Lions fulfill our motto “We Serve” by
sponsoring a local Boy Scout Troop, testing children’s sight and hearing
and even finding time to attend twice-monthly
club meetings.
