  • 1st Annual Cook’s Cow Town Steak Fry was a huge success
Try your luck at the "Hat's Off Game"

On Saturday, November 18th, the Laveen Lions Club threw an old-fashioned Western get-together to remember!

In years past our club committed the November date to the Annual Black Powder Turkey Shoot which attracted several hundred visitors each year. With the increase in new building in the area of the “North Forty” club grounds, the turkey shoot was suspended in 2004. In November 2005 the club held a small, members and guests only steak fry at the club grounds. And except for the blowing dust, falling tamarisk limbs, and traffic noise, the event was declared a success.

This year, Terry and Jerry Cook offered the use of Cook’s Cow Town, a grassy, shady acre with a collection of false-fronted buildings and old farm machinery – a perfect spot for a Laveen Lions Club get-together. A total of 58 members and guests dug into huge 1 ½ pound rib-eye steaks especially cut for us (and provided at a great discount) by Laveen’s own Frys Food store.

Members got into the spirit of the event by dressing Western and donning an amazing variety of cow-boy hats. After a fine meal, folks got acquainted with three new club members or just sat and visited as kids and grand-kids ran and played.

Later in the afternoon our own Western balladeers The Uncalled Four entertained with an impromptu concert and the hotly contested 1st Annual Cook’s Cow Town Horseshoe Pitching Contest was won by Lion Desi and Teresa (guest of Lion Tony Sanchez).

A big thank-you goes out to all who worked so hard to make this event a success: Frys Food and Drug who provided the steaks: Lion Warren who wrangled the baked potatoes, Lions Tony, Desi, and Ramon who barbequed the steaks, burgers and hot dogs to perfection; Lion Truman for the use of two canopies; Lion Tom for providing a wonderfully nostalgic collection of old-time Western music (including the Sons of the Pioneers Cool Water which prompted a sing-along by Lions Tom and Mario). Special thanks to Lions Sharon and George Anderson who coordinated the event, and to Lions Ron Butler, Jerry Cook, and Harry Tolliver who worked a full year getting Cooks Cow Town in shape. And a very special thank-you goes Lions Terry and Jerry Cook for graciously allowing the use of their property.
